Novak Djokovic accepted a wild card into the Geneva Open, which has many tennis fans interested in the tournament. Aside from the current number one player, Ben Shelton and Casper Ruud are other players to watch out for. However, four players withdrew from the ATP event.
Four Players Withdrew from the Geneva Open
When the Geneva Open initially accepted withdrawals, Tommy Paul was one of them. Maybe it’s because of his run to the semifinals at the Italian Open, his maiden appearance in a Masters 1000 tournament on clay. For obvious reasons, Paul may be wary about overdoing it in the days leading up to the May 26th French Open, especially considering his injury recovery.
According to Bwager sources, Jiri Lehecka is one more player who pulled out of the Geneva Open. His injury prompted him to withdraw in the first set of his semifinal match against Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Madrid Open. The Czech player now has a sprint to the French Open on the cards, which explains why he was expected not to participate in the Switzerland event.
Additionally, Jordan Thompson pulled out of the Geneva Open. The Australian’s decision-making process is less transparent. Thompson met Thiago Monteiro in the Italian Open, where Monteiro defeated him in straight sets. Throughout that competition, he wasn’t visibly impaired. It is possible that the 30-year-old would want to relax and rejuvenate before the French Open.
One more participant, Facundo Diaz Acosta, pulled out of the Geneva Open. The Argentine has suffered a severe collarbone injury. Diaz Acosta will likewise not compete in the French Open. Exactly how soon he will be able to play again is a mystery.
Geneva Open Replacements
Paul’s decision not to compete in the Geneva Open is good news for Rinky Hijikata. His two straight-set losses on dirt this year suggest he has not yet found his form on clay. This might all change when the 22-year-old competes in the ATP 250 event in Switzerland.
Lehecka is benched in the Geneva Open in favor of Yannick Hanfmann. Even though the German has historically performed better on clay courts, he has had mixed fortunes in the 2024 clay-court season. But no matter who you draw in Geneva, Hanfmann is always a threat.
Given Thompson’s decision to withdraw from the tournament, Alexander Shevchenko is also scheduled to appear. Another player who has had trouble on clay this season is the powerful 23-year-old. Before the French Open, he will try to turn things around in the last week.
The entry list for the Geneva Open now includes Daniel Altmaier, who is the fourth player. A few weeks back at the Madrid Open, the German had a sensational victory over Arthur Fils. He has subsequently lost three bouts in a row, though. This is his chance to fix that decline.
