Despite Governor Ron DeSantis’s support, lawmakers failed to pass a bill allowing a Miami Beach casino. The governor cannot sway legislative leaders to approve a proposed casino bill. Also, South Florida billionaires and Miami Beach leaders opposed the proposal for a casino in their area.
Even though DeSantis was an influential figure in the Republican-controlled state legislature, some worry that his influence may wane now that he is not running for president.
Although DeSantis has been quiet, House Speaker Paul Renner said last week that he had discussed the gaming bill with the governor one-on-one. According to online casino platform experts, DeSantis and his administration had urged lawmakers to advance the measure this year.
Proposed Miami Beach Casino
Legislators could not pass the measure, marking one of the rare occasions in recent years when DeSantis failed to grant his legislative requests. However, there is talk that this subject may be brought up again in the 2025 session.

In an extensive statement, Jeremy Redfern, a representative for DeSantis, stated that the government was “open” to a plan that would have transferred one license from a blue-collar residential neighborhood to a beachfront hotel aimed at tourists, thereby contracting gambling operations in South Florida.
The law would have allowed someone with a gaming license with slot machine technology to move them up to 30 miles inside Broward and Miami-Dade counties if the new site was at least 15 miles from the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s casinos. The measure states that the current one must be surrendered to transfer a gaming permit to another site. Two licenses are in Soffer’s possession.
